Coronavirus (COVID-19) Support and Guidance

The Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) is working with the Office of the Governor, Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to coordinate and plan the state’s response to COVID-19.

The TCFP is reacting to the public health emergency as quickly and efficiently as possible as new information becomes available daily. We are committed to keeping our services available to the Texas fire service in every way that we can through the duration of this crisis.

Communicating With Us

Currently, due to the COVID-19 crisis, we only have a few people in the office each day (about 25% of our staff). We will continue to adhere to the Governor’s recommendations for office staffing to protect the health and safety of our employees.

Governor's Rule Waiver

In accordance with section 418.016 of the Texas Government Code, the Office of the Governor grants TCFP’s request to suspend the following rules:

37 TAC 423.3, to the extent necessary to allow firefighters who have passed all related classwork to begin practice without taking the exam and to require those for whom this suspension is waived to pass the certifying exam within 60 days after normal licensing procedures resume; and
37 TAC 447.5, to the extent necessary to allow part-time firefighters who may be needed to help supplement a local fire department to work beyond the 500 hours per year limitation.

This suspension is in effect until terminated by the Office of the Governor or until the March 13, 2020 disaster declaration is lifted or expires.
