Certified training facilities

One of the Texas Commission on Fire Protection's most frequently asked questions is, "Where can I find fire protection training?" This page provides a search engine of training facilities certified by the commission. Rules governing the certification of training facilities can be found in the Standards Manual for Fire Protection Personnel, Chapter 427.

Frequently, the question is posed as, "How do I become a fire fighter in Texas?" Gaining employment as a fire fighter is very much like any other job. You must apply for a job as a fire fighter. Some departments employ individuals with no prior training as fire fighters. These departments will put these individuals through a departmental training academy.

A large number of cities that employ fire fighters require that an applicant be one who has already completed the basic training and has passed the structural fire fighter examination as prescribed by Texas state law and administered by the commission's fire service standards and certification division. Should you wish to be trained prior to seeking employment, training is available through a number of junior or community colleges located throughout the state. Occasionally, a larger city in which the department trains its own fire fighters will accept trainees from outside of the department.

This search engine lists colleges and fire departments that are approved to offer basic academies. This list also includes facilities approved to provide training for volunteer fire fighters and other disciplines, such as inspector or investigator.

Note: The search engine below displays only the cities and counties in which there is a facility with an active certification. Cities and counties not listed in the selection boxes do not have any fire protection training facilities with an active commission certification.
