Once you have completed the basic training you will be tested on hands on skills.

Basic fire suppression training will be an intensive program that can be done in a classroom or online; however, you will have to show up in person to attend fire fighter skills training. Each training provider determines the schedule, length and cost for their training program.

The commission does not provide any financial assistance for training. Colleges may have grants and scholarships available for first responder training and some departments may provide cadets with training free of charge; contact the provider for details.

No, however structural fire protection personnel must be:

  • at least 18 years old, must be
  • able to complete the physical requirements of the job
  • communicate in English

It depends. You can complete, follow the instructions and submit an application for early review (form TCFP-012) that requires fingerprint-based background check before starting your basic training to make sure you are eligible for certification. The application for early review of eligibility is for certification only. It does not impact admission to a fire service education program.
